What We've Been Up To

This week has been a bit rough. So far in her life Emma has been a very healthy baby. This week she had a fever for 2 days from her shots, and now she has a bad cold. She went from being really fun though somewhat of a drama queen to just plain ornery and sad most of the time. It's so sad to watch her not feel well. Hopefully she'll start feeling better soon. She had her first throw up experience, and let me tell you there is no smell in the world like thrown up milk. It is so incredibly bad.

In other news, I recently bought the best cookbook ever, recommended to me by my sister Sarah. It 's from the blog Our Best Bites. I am having so much fun trying out new recipes, and making things from scratch that I usually just buy at the store. Homemade tortillas...awesome. There have been a couple bummers, but for the most part we are loving it.

I have also been attending more Zumba classes with my sister. I think I'm getting better. Now I'm just really bad whereas before I was atrociously bad. There are some crazy ladies that go to these things though. They have every dance memorized and do their own improvisation in the middle. I have to try not to laugh out loud at them.

Last night Sterling's dad came over for a movie night. He and Sterling love old John Wayne movies, so over the course of our marriage they have been making me watch them. The only one I ever saw growing up was Mcklintock. Last night is was El Dorado. I must say it was pretty good, but my favorite is still Mcklintock. You can't beat a good fist fight where everybody falls down into a mud hole. Just never ever ever watch The Searchers unless you want to feel miserably depressed at the end.

So I guess life is pretty good. I have a wonderful husband who didn't even yell at me when I scraped the side of his most beloved car. I have a sweet baby who will hopefully be feeling better soon. What more could a girl ask for?

Birthday Pictures

We had so much fun celebrating Emma's birthday yesterday. In the morning I let her open one present. Sterling really wanted her to have a doll. She got a little tiny doll to take in the diaper bag and one a little bigger. We gave her the tiny one early so she could have something to play with at church and she absolutely loves it. One day she pulled it out of my bag and said her first real word "baby." Since then she is always asking for her baby. So I thought she would be excited to open her present and find another baby. Nope. She was excited for a few minutes until she found her real baby. Then she just threw the big baby on the ground. It was sad. When she grows up she may only be able to have one child.
For lunch we met Sterling at a park for a picnic. Emma was so excited to play on the toys. She especially loves going down the slide.

Last night we had our families come over for cupcakes and ice cream. I bought matching cups and plates at the dollar store. I told Sterling a few days ago about how there were also mathcing party hats, but I didn't think he would appreciate them because he's not a real festive guy. But he surprised me by saying that for his daughter's first birthday he wanted party hats, so we went back and got some hats. Everyone was a good sport about wearing them. Emma was a little unsure about what was going on.

Emma got some new toys and books and clothes. One really special gift was a stuffed frog and a note that Sterling's mom had made before she passed away. It's something Emma can have to remind her of her grandma. We wish she could have been there with us last night.

Next it was time for the cake. Emma did not disappoint when it came to eating her cupcake. At first she just kind of checked it out.
Then she really dug in.
And in the end she looked like this.

It was great! Although it was a pain to clean up.

Happy Birthday

One year ago today Emma and I were in the hospital crying. I don't know why she was crying, but bless that nurse who gave her a binkie and took her to the nursery. I was crying because I just kept thinking, "What the heck have we done?" I was terrified out of my mind to take her home.
I can't believe it has been a whole year. My baby is still pretty much a baby, even though I can no longer find pajamas with the feet, but she is growing so fast. She says yes, no, hi, daddy, mama and baby. She climbs the stairs, gets into absolutely everything and loves to dance to my old CDs that I used to play for my students (She loves the Steve James CDs, for all you former teachers.)
I love my little girl. She can be the most frustrating little thing, but the next second she is so sweet and I just have to kiss those chubby cheeks. I'm so glad I get to stay home with her and be her mom.
That night in the hospital seems like a lifetime ago. So much has changed, but it has all been worth it. I'm glad Sterling stopped me from trying to give her away to every person that came to visit us. I would be lost without her.
